Description
This is a small, single-storey, two-bay house situated at the end of a long lane off the west side of Ballynahatten Road, near Kilkeel. Likely constructed between 1800 and 1819, the building was of interest previously due to its thatched roof, although it has since undergone significant alterations.
The house retains its four walls and original plan but has few remaining original features. The pitched roof is now covered with asbestos slates and has cement verges, replacing the original thatch. A rendered chimney stands on the right-hand gable. Modern half-round plastic rainwater goods are fitted, with a downpipe to the left of the façade. The original wallhead has been raised. The walls are cement-rendered and whitewashed. A modern, stained timber door is centrally positioned, flanked to the right by a small, four-paned fixed timber window, likely original and lacking a cill, and to the left by a larger, modern replacement window with a concrete cill. The left gable is blank. The right gable abuts a lean-to extension with a corrugated metal roof, harled walls, and a modern 1/1 casement window. The rear elevation is blank.
An Ordnance Survey map from 1834 shows a building at this location described as a small, harled and whitened thatched cottage with one gable rising to a chimney stack, flanked by two cross-paned windows, and featuring a corrugated iron-roofed lean-to on its gable. A record slide from the same date depicts an entrance as a sheeted half door, a large, exposed box 2/2 sliding sash window with horns to the left, and a smaller four-paned fixed window to the right, both with painted stone cills. The vernacular style building is now in private ownership, and is used as a house.
