Description

This is a single-storey, two-bay cottage, likely built between 1820 and 1839, situated beside 62 Ballymageogh Road in the townland of Ballymageogh, near Kilkeel, County Down. The cottage sits perpendicular to the road. It is a vernacular building, meaning it reflects local building traditions.

The roof is pitched and covered in natural slate, with a blue clay ridge and terracotta verge tiles. A single rendered chimney stands on the shared party wall with a neighbouring property. The rainwater goods are cast iron, and the walls are whitewashed, with remnants of the original ochre limewash visible. Projecting stones are visible in the ground to the left of the front elevation, possibly indicating an unfinished extension. The main elevation faces southeast.

A gabled porch is situated at the left end, featuring plain timber bargeboards. The porch contains a pair of timber casement windows, with a fixed two-pane transom above, set onto a granite cill. A single step leads to the four-panelled front door, which is painted timber with the top two panels oval-headed and glazed with patterned glass, and the bottom two raised and fielded. Identical windows are situated to the right of the porch, one in each bay. The left and right gables are blank. The rear elevation mirrors the front, featuring a two-over-two sliding sash window with horns in the right bay, and a blank left bay.

To either side of the front and rear elevations are pairs of granite piers with whitewashed pyramidal caps. These piers support metal gates, the front gate being flat wrought iron and the rear gate constructed from painted corrugated iron on steel framing. A random rubble stone wall, containing a pair of granite posts in line with the main entrance and some surviving original ironmongery, runs parallel to the façade.

A building is shown on the 1834 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map at this location. It was not listed in the 1838 Valuation, suggesting a valuation of less than £5. The building is currently used as a store.
