Description

This is a vernacular farmhouse built between 1880 and 1899. It is located in the Ballinran townland, near Kilkeel, and retains a relatively unchanged appearance and a pleasing setting. The house is a two-storey, three-bay structure facing southeast, with a monopitched lean-to extension adjoined to the right gable. The roof has natural slate coverings, rendered copings, and a rendered chimney on each gable. There are no rainwater goods. The walls are of painted rendered stone with a projecting eaves course. The main elevation features an off-centre red timber and glazed door flanked by two-over-two sliding sash windows with painted granite cills. Identical windows are aligned on the first floor. The southwest gable has a single window on the first floor to the right side. The rear elevation has a two-over-two sash window to the third bay on the ground floor and a small casement window to the second bay on the first floor. A monopitched lean-to, constructed of painted and rendered stone with slated coverings, is attached to the northeast gable. A modern door is located on the façade, with plain side and rear elevations and windows to the rear. The garden is laid to lawns and enclosed by a random rubble wall. Close to the house stands a small gabled outhouse constructed from squared and coursed granite blocks. The house, outbuilding, and surrounding walling are included in this listing, reflecting its architectural proportions, quality, and survival of interior features, as well as its local historical interest and setting. The property was shown on the 1901 Ordnance Survey map and is privately owned.
