Lime Kiln, Moyad Road, Attical, Kilkeel, Newry, Co Down, BT34 4HP

This is a lime kiln, likely constructed between 1900 and 1919, situated on the north side of a narrow lane off Moyad Road, near Attical, Kilkeel, County Down. It holds primarily local interest due to its association with lime production, historically used for mortar and as an agricultural fertilizer.

The kiln is substantially intact and is embedded within an earthen bank. It’s built of rounded granite fieldstones in a dry-built method. The single kiln pot is accessed from a field to the rear and is believed to be of full height. The internal diameter is approximately 1.9 metres, although it is now largely infilled. A draw hole facing the lane is defined by two large granite lintels and was originally a 1.9-metre-high opening. The kiln was recorded as derelict and possesses industrial archaeological interest. It is possibly shown on the 1901 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map, but not on earlier editions.
