Lime Kiln, adjacant to 31 Island Road, Attical, Newry, Co Down, BT34 4ST

This is a lime kiln, primarily of local interest relating to lime production for mortar and agricultural fertiliser. The kiln is located adjacent to 31 Island Road, near Newry, County Down. It is an intact example, built into a bank on the east side of the road from dry-built granite rubble fieldstones. The kiln has a single pot, which is now overgrown. It rises approximately 3 metres to the roadside, but is lower on the field side. The draw hole faces the road.

The structure was marked on the Ordnance Survey 6-inch map of 1834, but not on the 1901 edition, indicating possible construction or rebuilding around the early 19th century, although a later rebuild cannot be ruled out. The kiln is recorded as derelict and holds industrial archaeological interest.
