Description
This is a substantial two-storey vernacular house, likely built between 1820 and 1839. It is set back on a lane off Tullyframe Road, near Kilkeel, County Down.
The house has a pitched natural slate roof finished with dark terracotta ridge tiles and overhanging boxed bargeboards on each gable. Rendered and painted chimneys, topped with coping, are present on both gables. Half-round metal rainwater goods run along the roofline. The walls are smooth, rendered and painted. The main, south-east facing elevation features a modern, partly glazed timber front door slightly left of centre. All ground floor windows are 1/1 sliding sash windows with horns, exposed window boxes, and painted granite cills. There is a single window to the left and right of the front door. The first floor has three windows arranged in line with those below, but reduced in height. The left and right gable walls are blank.
The rear elevation has a timber door with t+g (tongue and groove) sheeting located slightly left of centre, within a projecting porch with a flat, corrugated iron roof and rendered walls. Ground floor windows are 1/1 sliding sashes with horns, exposed boxes, and flush painted cills. A pair of narrow 1/1 sliding sash windows are located to the left of the door, while a single 1/1 window sits to the right. The first-floor windows comprise two openings: the left window is directly above its ground floor counterpart but narrower, and the right window is offset to the right of the one below.
A modern blockwork wall sits at the front, alongside an entrance gate on the right side of the house. Behind the house, a small water pump, marked with a "flag" logo, is situated on the right.
The building appears on the Ordnance Survey 6-inch map of 1834. It was not included in the 1838 Valuation, suggesting an original valuation of less than £5 and indicating that it was initially a single-storey structure.
