Description
A detached three-bay two-storey house built around 1850, located north of Tattysallagh Road near Drumquin. This is a direct-entry dwelling of rectangular plan, consisting of two principal rooms to each floor separated by a timber stair hall. The building has undergone no significant modern intervention and retains its original plan form largely intact, along with much internal timberwork and original detailing.
The house is constructed of roughcast walls with painted ashlar sandstone quoins over a painted plinth. The roof is pitched natural slate with terracotta ridge tiles and sandstone chimneys. The principal elevation faces east and features a central entrance with a replacement timber-panelled door surmounted by a transom light, flanked by single windows on each side. Three windows occupy the first floor. The windows are timber-framed 6/6 sliding sashes in smooth reveals (diminished at first-floor level) to the principal elevation; 2/2 sliding sashes are used elsewhere. All windows have painted sandstone sills. The south elevation contains a single first-floor window. The west elevation has two ground-floor windows surmounted by a timber casement window at first floor on the left; a central bay contains a replacement timber-panelled entrance door at ground floor with a single window above; and a single window at each floor on the right. The north elevation is blank and is abutted at ground floor by a timber-framed shelter.
The setting consists of private grounds bounded to the road at the south by a rubble boundary wall, with access via a pair of concrete block piers with sandstone coping. A two-storey rubble outbuilding stands to the north, featuring a pitched corrugated metal roof, timber-framed sliding sash windows, vertically-sheeted timber doors, and an exterior stair providing access to a loading door at first floor. A further single-storey stable block stands to the north-east, similarly detailed.
The house first appears on the second edition Ordnance Survey map of 1853 with two outbuildings. Griffith's Valuation records it as a house, offices and land leased by Owen Donnelly from the Earl of Castlestuart, valued at £1 15 shillings for the buildings, later revised to £1 10 shillings. The property passed to Francis McLoughlin in 1892, when the value was raised to £2 10 shillings, possibly indicating rebuilding or remodelling, though the style and detail remain consistent with mid-nineteenth-century construction. In 1918 the property became held in fee by the occupier. A stone inscribed 'AD 1891' above a hearth is present internally, though both internal and external detailing indicates an earlier date of construction, with styling suggesting around 1850. The building, together with its outbuildings, makes a positive contribution to the rural architecture of the area and represents a good and unaltered example of its type.
