Description

Greenan Bridge is a four-span, flat-stone road bridge over a river, built around 1850. It is a well-executed example of mid-19th century engineering and fine stone masonry, crossing a river in a rural location, and likely constructed to serve the nearby Holme House. The bridge carries the road on a northeast-southwest axis. It features four round-headed arches formed with tooled ashlar voussoirs, rising from rounded cutwaters and ashlar spandrels. A projecting ashlar stringcourse runs to the base of the parapet. Full-height ashlar piers with rubble-stone parapets, and barrel coping stones, are situated at the ends of the elevations. Curved rubble-stone abutments are present on the south elevation, and an ashlar pier is located to the southwest. Ashlar soffits are present under all arches, with some shuttered concrete repairs apparent. The bridge first appeared on the Ordnance Survey map of 1854, and may have been built to serve ‘The Holme’, a property described in 1858 as a house, office, and land occupied by John Sproule. The bridge is of local historical interest, with industrial archaeological value. It is currently used as a bridge and is owned by the transport authority.
