Description
This is a vernacular, one-and-a-half storey, two-bay house situated perpendicular to the east side of Sandy Brae, in the townland of Ballymageogh, near Newry. The house dates to between 1820 and 1839, with a later addition of “1951” inscribed on the gable. A building is shown on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map at this location, and it was not included in the 1838 Valuation, suggesting a valuation of less than £5.
The building has a pitched natural slate roof with cement coped verges and semicircular metal rainwater goods. The walls are rendered and cement-lined to the front. The principal, south-facing elevation features a modern, partly glazed timber door set within a shallow, projecting porch with a pitched natural slate roof and plain painted timber bargeboards, positioned to the left of centre. To the left and right of the door are window openings, now sheeted over. A one-storey, flat-roofed extension abuts the left gable, and a small 1/1 sliding sash window is located at attic level. A narrow, square chimney rises nearly to the ridge of the house on the left gable of this extension. Also at attic level is a 1/1 sliding sash window.
The rear elevation has a lean-to extension across the right half, with an asbestos sheeted roof and smooth cement-rendered walls. Two equally spaced, two-pane timber casements with concrete cills are present on the rear wall, along with a partly glazed modern timber door on the left cheek and a blank section on the right. The right gable is rendered and whitewashed, with a small 1/1 window at attic level. This gable was formerly abutted by a flat-roofed concrete block shed, which is now largely demolished. A flat-roofed, modern garage sits parallel to and in front of the house, with rendered and painted walls. The building was previously recorded as derelict.
