Description
This is a one-and-a-half-storey, three-bay vernacular dwelling built in the 1920s and 1930s, situated on the south side of Livins Road in Attical, near Kilkeel. It replaced an earlier house and stands alongside a threshing barn, which is separately designated as a building of historic importance.
The house has a pitched roof covered with natural slate, with tiled verges. Four concrete-coped and cement-rendered chimneys are present: one on each gable and one between each bay, with the third from the left being a dummy. Rainwater goods are absent. The walls are wet-dash cement rendered. The principal north-facing elevation fronts onto the road. The entrance is centrally located and features a modern, painted timber door. All windows are modern painted timber, with two upper sash openers, and have granite cills designed to resemble sliding sash windows. Each bay contains a single window, with another modern top-opening timber window located to the right of the entrance in the middle bay. The left and right elevations are blank.
The site slopes towards the rear, and a flight of five granite steps leads up to the entrance door, falling to the right. A small niche, formerly used as a dog kennel, is set into the left-hand side elevation. A modern painted timber top-opening window is positioned to the right of the entrance in the middle bay. The front garden is enclosed by a hedge. To the left of the hedge is a restored working water pump, though it bears no maker’s name or mark. A modern metal entrance gate, positioned opposite the front door, is flanked by two square, rendered piers topped with pyramidal caps. A wrought iron gate is located within the enclosing wall to the left of the house. The adjacent threshing barn (listed separately) is located to the east.
