Description

This is a lime kiln, likely built between 1840 and 1859, located off Ballymageogh Road, near Attical, Kilkeel, County Down. The kiln is of local interest reflecting its former use in lime production, which was essential for mortar and agricultural fertiliser.

The kiln is constructed of dry-built granite rubble fieldstones and sits on the south side of a lane to the east of the main road. It features a single pot, which is now largely infilled, with the draw hole facing the lane. A whin stone, used for pounding gorse and whins to produce cattle fodder, is situated on the eastern side. A field wall runs along the rear of the site. There is no visible ramp.

The kiln appears on the 1859 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map but not on earlier or later editions. It was recorded as derelict and is considered to be of industrial archaeological interest.
