Lime kiln, To front of 64 Greencastle Pier Rd, Kilkeel, Newry, BT34 4LR

This is a substantial late 19th-century lime kiln located to the front of 64 Greencastle Pier Road, Kilkeel, Newry. Situated on the south side of the road, it is cut into the north slope of a low hill, providing direct access to a single pot that is now infilled. The façade is a wall constructed of random rubble, finished with a concrete coping. The draw hole is buried beneath recent earth fill, with approximately 3 metres of walling still exposed. A crack is visible on the left side of the wall, indicating movement.

The kiln was first documented in the 1888 valuation book, belonging to Henry McIlroy. It is shown on Ordnance Survey maps from 1901 and 1919. A 1920 valuation entry describes it as being in ruins. Based on its size and location, the kiln was likely used for commercial production of burnt lime, sourced from quarries at Carlingford, rather than for the more typical domestic use by local farmers. The kiln is considered to be of industrial archaeological interest and is currently in a derelict state.
