Ruined Church, Greencastle Pier Road, Greencastle, Kilkeel, Newry, Co Down, BT34 4LR

The site comprises the ruins of a single-story church aligned east-west, situated within a field on the north side of Greencastle Pier Road in the townland of Greencastle, near Kilkeel, County Down. The church is of late medieval origin, with an extension to the west likely dating to the 16th or 17th century.

The surviving structure is of limited architectural interest but may possess some historical significance due to the scarcity of early churches. The walls, constructed of random rubble using a mixture of undressed granite and Silurian field stones, have substantial traces of external lime render. The bases of the walls, particularly at the gables, are battered. The roof was originally covered with natural slate, and remnants of blue clay ridges remain. The north elevation features four openings: a large rectangular window opening with a splayed reveal (head and cill missing); a narrow splayed slit window; a doorway (now without a lintel), with a vertical recess on its left reveal for a timber doorframe; and a small square opening. The east gable has a large window opening, the head of which has collapsed. The south elevation contains two window openings; a larger one, aligned with the opening on the opposite wall, and a smaller one, just left of centre. The west gable has a central window opening, with a small square socket of unknown function to its right. The wall heads and gables are heavily overgrown. The wider window openings likely date to the 16th or 17th century extension. The site is a scheduled monument and is recorded on the Sites and Monuments Record.
