Description
This complex comprises three structures situated on the south side of the road overlooking the sea: a kiln, a two-storey dwelling, and a one-storey dwelling.
The kiln is a substantial structure orientated north-south with its draw hole facing south. The top and sides have been artificially embanked, with the latter sloping down to rubble stone retaining walls. The front is delineated by a random rubble wall, and a low wall runs around the top (except to the north to permit access from the rear ramp). A single circular pot is present. The draw hole has a segmental head approximately 2.5 metres above ground, with splayed reveals, all of roughly dressed granite. A one-storey lean-to abuts the front of the kiln, enveloping the draw hole. It formerly had a natural slate roof, though most has now disappeared. Its walls are of random rubble with a projecting eaves course. Internally it is divided into two sections: to the left is a doorway, and to its right is a window illuminating the section over the draw hole; to the right is another doorway into a smaller room which wraps around part of the east side of the kiln. Wall breaks suggest this lean-to is a later addition. The entire structure is in a derelict and overgrown state.
The two-storey dwelling stands immediately to the right (east) of the kiln. It is a substantial four-bay house, with three bays at left forming the dwelling and the right-hand bay a store. It has a natural slate roof with finely dressed granite verges; rainwater goods are missing. A rendered chimney is present on the left gable and a second between the third and fourth bays. Three skylights break the rear pitch. The walls are lime rendered random rubble with a projecting eaves course. The principal façade faces the sea. At ground floor centre is an asbestos-roofed lean-to with an entrance door to front and an infilled window opening on its right. Window openings at ground floor on either side of the entrance, now sheeted over, mark the adjacent bays. At first floor, three dormer windows, also sheeted over, break the eaves in line with the ground floor openings. At ground floor right is a large doorway into the end-bay store, with a flat head of finely dressed granite voussoirs containing a pair of sheeted timber doors. The end bay elevation has no first floor openings. The left gable is blank save for a boarded-over window opening at ground floor left. The rear elevation has a window opening at centre and a doorway at right, both sheeted over; the first floor has no openings. The right elevation contains a loading door at first floor, with a wrought-iron gate immediately to its right providing access to the back yard, which contains several small sheds of no special merit. The building is presently in reasonable condition.
The one-storey dwelling stands immediately north-east of the two-storey house, aligned north-south. It is a four-bay structure with an asbestos slate roof and clay verges. Low rendered chimneys are positioned between bays 1 and 2, between bays 3 and 4, and on the gable of bay 4 at right. The walls are whitewashed and lime rendered random rubble. At centre is a flat porch with a partly glazed sheeted door on its right cheek and a 3/3 sliding sash to front. Two 3/3 sashes are positioned to the left of the porch (one to each bay), and two to the right (to the third and fourth bays). All windows have painted cills and exposed boxes. A gravelled garden is situated to front. Both gables are blank. The rear wall is pebbledashed. A small lean-to abuts the right-hand bay, featuring a corrugated asbestos roof, a window in the yard-facing wall, and a rounded corner. This house is well maintained as a holiday home.
