Shellfish storage pens, Greencastle Point, Greencastle Pier Road, Kilkeel, Newry, Co Down, BT34 4LR

A shellfish storage pen located on the intertidal beach at Greencastle Point, near Kilkeel. The structure, built between 1980 and 1999, consists of a rectangular enclosure approximately 17 metres by 11 metres, defined by a series of concrete posts around 1.2 metres high. A gap in the eastern line of posts allows vehicle access to the enclosure. Two small square chambers, with concrete walls approximately 0.6 metres high built between the posts, are situated at the southern end. Remnants of open metal frames are attached to the tops of these walls. The pen was erected by a Banbridge fishmonger, Mr Gorman, to store sacks of shellfish, initially winkles gathered locally. Initially stored on the beach, the shellfish were moved to this lockable enclosure after thefts occurred, prior to export from Warrenpoint. The structure was in use for only a few years.
