Description

This is a charming vernacular house, likely constructed between 1820 and 1839, situated on the west side of Tullyframe Road in Kilkeel, County Down. It is a single-storey building with an attic, facing south. The roof is pitched and covered in natural slate, with tiled verges and a cast-iron skylight on the front slope. The property has two chimneys, both painted and with coped stacks: one on the left gable, and another on the party wall between the middle and right bays. There are no rainwater goods. The exterior walls are painted with a wet-dash finish, featuring a raised eaves course. The main entrance is centrally located within a slightly projecting gabled porch, also featuring a natural slate roof and matching facade walls, and a t+g sheeted door. Each bay has a 3/3 sliding sash window with painted granite cills. The right gable is blank, while the left gable has a small 1/1 sliding sash window near the attic level, to the right of the chimney. The rear elevation has a lean-to return abutting the central and left bays; the remaining wall to the right is blank. The return is roofed with corrugated asbestos and has walls of painted random rubble. This return contains two windows: one to the left with a pair of small timber casements, and one to the right, a larger 1/1 sliding sash, both with concrete cills, indicating a later addition. A modern plywood door is set into the right cheek of the return, and the left cheek is blank. The front of the property has a small tarmaced area. Behind the house are a two-storey barn and a single-storey outhouse. A building is shown on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map, and its absence from the 1838 valuation suggests a property value of less than £5.
