Ice House, Mourne Park Demesne, Kilkeel, Newry, Co Down, BT34

This icehouse is located within the intact Mourne Park demesne, near Kilkeel, Newry, County Down. Likely dating from between 1800 and 1819, it served the now-separate house at HB16/05/009A. The structure comprises a low, rectangular passage, approximately 2 metres high, aligned north-west to south-east, with an entrance at the south-east end. It features walls constructed of squared rubble granite, topped with a semicircular brick roof rendered with cement externally. A brick-dressed doorway is present at the south-east end, although the door itself is missing. The chamber is covered by earth externally and is now overgrown. The icehouse was marked as such on an Ordnance Survey map from 1834 and later noted as disused on the 1901 edition. Internally, the sump framework remains. Primary documentary sources are Ordnance Survey maps held at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI), specifically maps numbered OS 6/3/55/1 (1834) and OS 6/3/55/3 (1901), both relating to Down sheet 55. The building is currently derelict.
