Description

The ice house located to the north-east of Newbiggin Hall is an early 19th-century structure. It consists of a single rectangular chamber that is situated below ground level. The walls, floor, and roof are made of red sandstone. Inside, the chamber features a sloping flagged floor with a central soakaway drain. The roof includes a central trapdoor opening, which, along with the entrance, is the only part visible above ground, as it is covered by a low mound of earth. Ice was placed into the building through this trapdoor.
