Description
The Beeches is a farmhouse built between 1830 and 1840. It features Flemish bond brickwork with stone quoins and surrounds, and has a graduated slate roof with brick end chimney stacks. The building is two stories high and has three bays. Notable architectural details include V-jointed stone quoins and two canted bay windows that flank the entrance. The entrance is framed by Tuscan columns supporting an open pediment, with pilasters behind and a round-headed arch, all featuring moulded stone surrounds. The panelled door has a patterned fanlight above it. The sash windows in the bays have single glazing bars, while all other windows are fitted with glazing bars. Decorative cast-iron gutter brackets are located below the eaves.
Attached to the rear of the house, at right angles, is an earlier farmhouse with sandstone rubble walls and a slate roof, which is two stories high and also has three bays. This earlier structure features a stone lintel dated 1706 with the initials R.R.S. Its original entrance has been converted into a window, and it has 19th-century replacement window surrounds with shutter hinge brackets and one wall shutter retaining catch. The windows in this section are all 20th-century casements, and it has snecked ashlar quoins.
The listing also includes a two-story extension at the rear made of English bond brickwork, with a slang roof and a brick chimney stack. This extension has sash windows with glazing bars and a 20th-century door. However, the listing does not include a further extension that has been extensively altered and features 20th-century garage doors.
