Description

Milestone located outside number 405 on London Road. This milestone dates from the early 19th century and was part of the Carlisle to Eamont Bridge Turnpike. It is made of whitewashed stone and has cast-iron plates. The stone is squared with a roughly rounded top and is set at an angle, displaying plates facing north and south. The plates feature black numbers indicating the distance: 16 miles to Penrith and 2 miles to Carlisle.
