Description
Milestone located east of number 325 on Kingstown Road, likely dating from 1820 to 1822, was constructed for the Carlisle-Glasgow Turnpike. It is made of red sandstone ashlar and features a rounded top with a circular cast-iron plate embedded in its face, displaying the raised letters "CARLISLE 2 MILES." The stone was originally whitewashed, and the lettering on the plate was highlighted in black. It may have been relocated a few meters from its original position to accommodate a slip road. A photograph of the milestone in its original location is held at Carlisle Museum. This milestone is situated near the former Kingstown Toll Cottage, which is not included in the listing.
