Description

Houghton War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1922, located in the churchyard of St John’s Church on Brunstock Lane in Houghton, Cumbria. It is prominently placed near the churchyard entrance and along the path leading to the church. The memorial features a wheel-head cross made of grey granite, which has a sheathed sword in relief at the top. This cross is mounted on a short shaft, which sits on a two-tiered plinth and a two-stepped base. The plinth and the upper step of the base display inscriptions in relief and incised lettering. The inscription reads: 1914 – 1918 / IN HONOUR OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH / WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR / (NAMES) / THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE.
