Description

The Lodge is a toll cottage dating from 1830, constructed for the Carlisle to Eamont Bridge Turnpike. It was later used as a lodge and is now a house. The building is of calciferous sandstone ashlar, now covered by painted render, set on a squared plinth. It has a pyramidal roof of graduated greenslate and central paired octagonal chimney stacks. The design is of a single storey, with two bays at the front and two bays to the right return. There are steel casement windows in original chamfered surrounds, each with a hoodmould. A 20th-century door is set within a chamfered pointed arch on the right return, alongside a similar window. The interior has not been inspected. Following the Turnpike’s closure in 1883, the cottage was purchased as the Lodge for Chertsey Hill by John Bewley Atkinson. Rear extensions have been added.
