Description

Set of neo-classical gates and two screens immediately left of gate lodge (HB16/05/007B) forming a principle entrance to Mourne Park demesne from Newry Road. The pair of gates at centre are of wrought iron with cast iron detailing. Each has dog bars, with decorative quatrefoil frieze; alternate dog bars rise between the quatrefoils to form the upper portion of the gate and each is terminated in a cast iron spear head. The top rail of gate sweeps up to meet each pier. Between each of these is a foliated spike finial hanging from which is a cast iron foliated pendant (hanging from top rail). The meeting rail of both gates is terminated in a decorative wrought iron scroll. Each gate pier has a moulded ashlar plinth with six ashlar courses over and is terminated by a full entablature including a tall fluted frieze with overhanging moulded cornice. Abutting to each side is a metal wrought-iron screen, detailed as gates (but without swept tops), and each containing a pedestrian gate at centre flanked by fixed railings. These are supported to each outer end by piers as before. Beyond to right is a convex sweep of rubble granite walling with a dressed coping. It terminates against a square ashlar pier with a plain pyramid cap from which the main boundary wall continues (HB16/05/066). To left side of screen, an identical pier is met by a lower, later rubble wall. Gates are now permanently blocked.
