Description
These attractive wrought iron gates, dating from the late 19th century, form a fitting entrance to Tamnaharry House. Although relocated slightly from their original position, they retain architectural and group value. The gates, screen, and granite piers are included in this listing.
The gates were erected around 1896 by Dr Bradley, who occupied the house at that time to replace earlier timber gates. They are part of a larger gate screen situated to the left of the west lodge. The screen is six bays wide, incorporating a pair of vehicular gates at the centre, a pedestrian gate to their right, a single bay screen section, and a double bay screen to the left of the vehicular gates. The entire structure is characterized by elaborate wrought-ironwork with Arts and Crafts detailing, including tendril-curved finials, cast flowers, stiff leaves, and crested panels. While the gates themselves are taller and more elaborately decorated, the screen is simpler in its ornamentation. The screen is supported on granite piers, each featuring a high, two-stage chamfered base course and a Gothic panelled front and inner cheek to the main shaft, finished with shallow bell-cast coping.
Tamnaharry House itself was constructed in the 1840s for Mr. Reilly, who married Harriet Hamilton, an heiress whose family had previously occupied a house on the site. Reilly commissioned Thomas J. Duff of Newry to design the house, the west and east lodges (located on Bridge Road), and to landscape the grounds. The gates were originally positioned adjacent to the front elevation of the west lodge, but have been moved to allow the lodge to become a separate property.
