Description

These cast iron gates mark the entrance to the former Greenwood demesne, now largely surrounded by modern housing development along the Warrenpoint Road. The original relationship to Greenwood House, which stood a short distance to the south and was demolished before the Second World War, has been lost.

The gates, comprising vehicular and pedestrian openings, are framed by a decorative screen. The screen’s left end curves inwards, while its right end has a shallow southward curve, creating an unusual angled appearance. The screen is set upon a low, moulded ashlar granite dwarf wall, with tall vertical bars featuring cast iron spearhead finials. Octagonal piers of one-piece ashlar granite, with moulded bases and copings topped with swept pyramidal caps, define the left and right ends. Scrolling posts support the screen, and three "birdcage" piers—large, square-section cast iron pillars with open Gothic tracery panels framed by slender cast iron colonettes, moulded bases, and three-stage stepped copings—carry the gates. A maker’s name is partially obscured on the piers, although "DUNDALK" is legible. The gates themselves are constructed of similar materials, with a set of dog-bars. One vehicle gate is missing, and the pedestrian gate is slightly damaged.

These gates were the main entrance to Greenwood Park and, though not explicitly shown on the 1834 Ordnance Survey maps, their configuration suggests they were likely present from that time. The demesne was owned by Mr Ross Thompson in the early 1800s. Other structures associated with the estate include a mock castle, a gate lodge, and a gardener's house.
