Description
The building at 46 Flagstaff Road, Newry, dates to between 1840 and 1859 and is currently a house, though it is recorded as derelict. It is a two-storey, single-bay house with two single-storey additions to the south, all aligned north-south on the east side of Flagstaff Road. The roof is pitched natural slate, now in a ruinous condition, with tiled skews. A brick cement-rendered chimney is on the left gable of the two-storey section, appearing to be a decorative dummy, and a masonry chimney is at the left end of the right single-storey block. There are half-round metal gutters. The walls are wet-dashed over random rubble.
The principal, west-facing elevation is symmetrical. A projecting canopy shelters the front door, which has four bolection-moulded panels. The canopy has a pitched natural slate roof and decorative bargeboards. Modern timber casement windows are positioned to either side on each floor, all with concrete cills. The facades of the single-storey blocks each have a single window opening, previously containing sliding sash windows and now with granite cills. The left gable of the main block has a window to the centre of each floor, mirroring the main block’s facade.
The rear elevation shows that most of the main block and part of the middle block are abutted by a more recent single-storey addition. The main block has a small window to the first floor, positioned to the left of centre, and a window to the middle block, just left of the abutting section. The left block is blank. The rear abutment features a shallow monopitched natural slate roof and wet-dashed concrete walls, and includes a modern door and windows of no particular interest. A blank section of the right gable of the main block is exposed, and the right gable of the right single-storey block has a ground floor window opening to the centre.
A building is depicted on the 1835 Ordnance Survey map. Historical records indicate a low valuation, initially a one-storey building worth £1.5s.0d in 1862, with no subsequent change. The building may have acquired its current one-and-two storey configuration by 1862. However, the wall finishes and window material suggest a substantial refurbishment in more recent times.
