Gate lodge and outbuildings, Greenwood Park, 60 Warrenpoint Road, Newry, Co Down, BT34 2PN

This is a much-altered former gate lodge with associated outbuildings, situated on the east side of Warrenpoint Road, near Newry. The building dates from around 1860 to 1879, although a structure in the same location appears on an Ordnance Survey map of 1834, and is believed to have been constructed after the death of Ross Thompson, sometime before 1835. It originally served as the gate lodge to Greenwood Park.

The lodge is a one-and-a-half-story, three-bay building. It has a pitched natural slate roof with overhanging boxed eaves and decorative wavy bargeboards. A single cement-rendered chimney is located to the left of the centre. Modern plastic rainwater goods are present. The front elevation, facing west towards the road, includes a small porch with a pitched natural slate roof and matching bargeboard. The walls are painted cement dash with a smooth rendered basecourse. A modern glazed timber front door is in the centre, and the windows are modern stained timber fixed lights with top-hung transoms and concrete cills. Single windows are present in the left and right bays of the front elevation, and windows are in each floor of the left gable. The rear elevation has been extensively altered and is largely modern. The right gable is abutted by a modern extension.

To the rear of the house is a yard enclosed to the rear and left by unpainted rubble stone outbuildings, which are one and two stories high and have natural slate roofs. A gateway on the left side provides access to the yard. The lodge is associated with Greenwood Park’s mock castle, gate screen, and gardener’s house, which are also listed separately.
