Description

This is a long, single-storey vernacular house dating from around the middle of the 19th century (1840-1859). It is situated on the east side of Greenan Lough Road, Newry.

The house is four bays wide and features a pitched roof covered in natural slate. Rendered red brick chimneys are positioned on each gable, with an additional chimney between the second and third bays. Tile skews and an advanced eaves course are present, but rainwater goods are absent. The walls are whitewashed and lime rendered over random rubble. The front elevation, facing west towards the road, has 2/2 sliding sash windows with horns and painted stone cills. Each end bay contains two windows, while the central bays each have a single window. A wind break porch with a pitched natural slate roof, scalloped timber bargeboard, and a tongue-and-groove sheeted half door is set to the right of the third bay from the left. Both the left and right gables are blank. The rear elevation has a door positioned in the second bay from the left, although the door head has collapsed. The right gable is also blank. A low, monopitched lean-to shed with a natural slate roof and walls matching the main building abuts the right side.

The setting includes a low wall enclosing the back garden. This wall is punctuated by a pair of cylindrical, whitewashed gate piers with conical concrete copings. These piers support wrought iron gates featuring twisted detailing and a central finial. Opposite the house, across the road, is a range of single-storey outbuildings which have been heavily altered.

The house was first depicted on the Ordnance Survey 6-inch map of 1860. The Second Valuation map, dating around 1861, is unavailable, therefore preventing details from the corresponding valuation book from being obtained.
