Description

Clonlea Graveyard is a small, raised graveyard of local significance situated on the west side of Grinan Lough Road, near Greenan, County Down. Dating from approximately 1800 to 1819, the graveyard is enclosed by a dry stone rubble wall, with a recess on the east side providing access via three stone steps. The memorial stones within are generally small and roughly dressed, all facing east.

Three larger, dressed stone crosses are centrally located, arranged in a line running north-south and again facing east. The central cross is from the 19th century, and its rear (west) face bears an inscription, largely illegible, including the name "Patrick Mooney" and the date 1883. The northern cross features recessed arcs carved into each corner at the crossing point. The southern cross is heavily weathered; inscribed on its west side are “P. McM” and the date 1842, and its base is incised with swirling Celtic-style ornamentation.

Local tradition suggests that the site was previously used as a mass house. The graveyard is depicted on the 1834 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map. An archaeological survey mentions the northern and southern crosses but not the central cross. The survey notes that the upper portion of the southern cross features weathered carvings, described as 19th-century copies of the nearby Kilbroney Cross, depicting "angel scrolls and panels of interlace."
