Description

This is a large, relatively plain, curving gate screen, likely dating to around 1820, marking the eastern (‘Downpatrick’) entrance to Seaforde Demesne. It has group value in conjunction with the other buildings within the Seaforde estate. The entrance is located to the west side of Newcastle Road, approximately half a mile north of Seaforde and about five miles west of Downpatrick.

The screen comprises high, lined, rendered curving wing walls with tall square gate piers and two sets of shorter outer piers at each end. The walls are topped with granite coping and curving wrought iron spearhead railings. The gate piers have granite caps and ball pinnacles, with a narrow projecting course just below the cap. The shorter outer piers have shallow pyramidal caps. Both the walls and piers have bevelled bases. The curving carriage gates are of a similar style to the railings, featuring a decorative band at approximately head height. Overgrown shrubbery is gradually encroaching on the walls and piers.

The eastern entrance to Seaforde Demesne is depicted on the Ordnance Survey map of 1834, indicating the gate screen was likely erected around 1820. While authorship is uncertain, it may be the work of Peter Frederick Robinson, who was employed by Colonel Matthew Forde at that time and likely designed Seaforde House. Between circa 1834 and 1858, a gate lodge was built on the opposite side of Newcastle Road; this was replaced around 1860 by the current lodge, situated behind the screen itself. The screen is included in the listing.
