Description
This is a single-story, rubble-built former outbuilding, likely dating to the late 19th century, that has been converted into a dwelling house in 1985. The property sits to the north side of a short lane, east of Newcastle Road, within the village of Seaforde.
The front facade faces south and is roughly symmetrical. A large, elliptical arched opening, originally a carriage entrance, dominates the center and is now filled with a modern doorscreen. It is brick-dressed, as are most of the openings, with brick also used as quoins. A relatively small window with a modern multi-pane frame is positioned to the left of the entrance, and a similar window is located to the right. A modern window inserted in 1985 is present on the west gable, alongside a tall rubble wall extending from its right-hand edge. The east gable features a window matching that of the west gable. The rear of the building has three windows of varying sizes and a modern door on the right side. The gabled roof is covered with natural slate and features two Velux windows at the front and one at the rear. A single brick chimney stack is located on the eastern side.
Valuation plans from 1836-8 and around 1860 show this site previously occupied by part of a long, single-story terrace, though annotations to the 1860 plan indicate the entire terrace had been removed by around 1900. The current structure was built approximately between 1880 and 1890 as a cart and carriage house, serving the then-farm manager’s residence to the immediate west. A 1904 Ordnance Survey plan and later valuation plans from 1935-56 document the building's presence.
