Gates and walling at Allan Lodge, 188 Newcastle Road, Seaforde, Naghan, Downpatrick, BT30 8NZ

The estate gates and walling at Allan Lodge, located to the east of the Newcastle Road in the centre of Seaforde, enclose the large front garden of a late Georgian style house, likely dating to the mid-1800s. The walls, constructed of low rubble with rough coping, extend from the north and south sides of the house, also enclosing a rear garden and yard. While the house’s construction may have occurred around the mid-1800s—potentially in 1836 or the 1860s—the walling itself may in part be earlier, with its layout appearing on maps from 1834.

The main vehicle gateway in the front wall is centred to the south, featuring two squat, square rubble piers topped with concave pyramidal granite caps. Taller rubble walls extending from the house's north and south facades enclose the rear garden and yard. The wall to the south has a vehicle gateway with rounded piers and cone caps. Modern metal sheeted gates are present. A gate pier to the north appears to have been reconstructed. A recently constructed flat-roofed garage adjoins the southern portion of the yard wall to the east.

Evidence suggests a house has existed on the site since at least 1834, and possibly since the second half of the 18th century. While sections of the walls may have been rebuilt or gates replaced over time, one pier at the rear gateway appears to have been recently reconstructed and possibly repositioned. Historical records, including estate papers, Ordnance Survey maps, and valuation records dating from 1836 to 1956, document the site’s evolution.
