Description
This is a small, picturesque single-story gate lodge, likely dating to the 1860s, situated at the western entrance to Seaforde Demesne, along Demesne Road approximately a mile northwest of Seaforde and six miles west of Downpatrick. Its design may be based on the work of English architect Peter Frederick Robinson (1776-1858), who had previously been employed by the Forde family in the 1820s and 1830s, and it is suggested that the lodge represents a posthumous execution of one of his designs. The lodge is accompanied by a well-proportioned gate screen.
The front facade, facing north, is symmetrical. A timber-sheeted door is centrally positioned, with a hood moulding above it. To the left of the door is a large three-light casement window with three panes to each light, above which is a simple label moulding. A similar window is located to the right of the door. An identical window is present on the eastern facade, and another one on the western facade. The rear of the lodge is enclosed by a high wall, preventing direct observation of the rear facade; the wall features a timber-sheeted door on the southern side. The front, east, and west facades are finished in unpainted lined render. The slated hipped roof has a substantial overhang with exposed rafter ends, and a central rendered chimney stack rises from the roof. Modern PVC rainwater goods are present.
This lodge replaced an earlier lodge built sometime between approximately 1834 and 1858 which was located on the opposite side of Demesne Road. The lodge piers, walling, and railings are also included in the listing. It holds local interest and group value with other buildings on the Seaforde estate, and is of architectural interest due to its style, proportions, and ornamentation, despite some detracting alterations. Primary sources relating to the lodge's construction are found within the Forde papers (PRONI D.366) and an Ordnance Survey map (PRONI OS/6/3/36/3).
