Description
18 Main Street is a Tudoresque, double-fronted two storey house with large gabled half dormers and tall prominent chimney stacks. It forms one part of a broken terrace of former estate workers' cottages dating to around 1840, originally built on the Forde estate. The terrace originally contained eight small dwellings, a smithy and a store.
The building sits on the south side of Main Street near the centre of the village of Seaforde, with an open lawn to the front and enclosed gardens to the rear. This particular house is positioned at the western end of the shorter western section of the terrace, with a larger two storey public house adjoining to the west.
The north-facing front façade is asymmetrical. Slightly to the left of centre is a timber-sheeted door. To either side of this are relatively large three-light casement windows, each with four vertically-arranged panes to each light. To the far right, where a doorway originally existed, is a smaller window in similar style. The first floor contains two further casement windows within the large gabled half dormers, matching those below. At the rear is a timber-sheeted door with a small casement window to either side, and to the first floor left is a half dormer with matching window. The façade is rendered and painted. The gabled roof is covered in natural slate with two Velux windows to the rear. A large central chimney stack with three tall pots positioned in diamond formation is a prominent feature. Metal rainwater goods complete the exterior.
The terrace was built around 1840 to house Forde estate workers, replacing some modest single storey cottages recorded in the 1836 valuation. By the mid 20th century the buildings gradually became vacant and fell into disrepair, with the smithy virtually derelict by 1970. The entire complex was acquired by Hearth Housing Trust by the mid 1970s and underwent comprehensive renovation in 1983–84. During this process, each pair of houses was combined to create four larger properties, of which this is one. The smithy and store were both converted to dwellings. The redundant doorways to the front were made into small windows, archways were fitted with conventional house doors, and new gables were added to the rear of each house.
