Description

16 Main Street is a Tudoresque, double-fronted two-storey house with large gabled half dormers and a tall prominent chimney stack. It forms part of a broken terrace of former estate workers' cottages built around 1840 for Forde estate workers, replacing modest single-storey cottages recorded in the 1836 valuation. The original grouping contained eight small dwellings, a smithy, and a store.

The terrace gradually became vacant and fell into disrepair during the mid-twentieth century, with the smithy virtually derelict by 1970. By the mid-1970s, Hearth Housing Trust acquired the entire group and undertook complete renovation in 1983-84. During this work, each pair of houses was amalgamated to form four larger properties (of which this is one). The smithy and store were both converted into dwellings. Redundant doorways to the front were made into small windows, and archways to the former smithy and store were fitted with conventional house doors. A large gable was added to the rear of all houses.

The building sits on the south side of Main Street near the centre of Seaforde village, at the east end of the shorter western terrace. An open lawn occupies the front, with enclosed gardens to the rear. The north-facing front façade is asymmetrical. Slightly right of centre is a timber-sheeted door. A relatively large three-light casement window with four vertically arranged panes to each light is positioned to the left and right of this door. At the far left is another timber-sheeted door providing access to a rear passage. Two further casement windows of similar design occupy the first floor within the large gabled half dormers. The rear elevation has a timber-sheeted door with small casement windows to either side, the far right serving the rear of the passage. The first floor right features a gabled half dormer with matching window. The façade is rendered and painted. The gabled roof is covered in natural slate with two Velux windows to the rear. A large central chimney stack with three tall pots is positioned in diamond formation. Metal rainwater goods complete the external details.
