Description

This is a relatively large, modern-looking single-storey house incorporating the remains of a vernacular dwelling likely built before 1834. The property assumed its present form around 1985, when the original dwelling was lengthened, a rear extension was added, and the roof pitch was raised. The asymmetrical front façade faces north and is situated on the south side of Main Street, close to the western edge of the village of Seaforde. A modern door is positioned to the right of centre, with a modern window to its left. To the right of the door is a similar, but slightly smaller window, and at the far right is a modern garage door. Both gables are blank. A large, modern gabled rear extension is visible, with a large modern window on the rear façade of the main house, to the right of the extension. The façade is finished in rough cast and painted. The main gable roof was raised to its current pitch around 1985 and is covered in concrete tiles, with at least two Velux windows visible on the rear slope. A single rendered chimney stack is present, along with PVC rainwater goods.

Buildings are shown on this site on Taylor’s and Skinner’s map of 1777, and a long terrace is depicted on the Ordnance Survey map of 1834. Valuation records from 1836 describe this terrace as comprising modest, single-storey dwellings, all below rateable value. Around 1840, much of the terrace was replaced with Tudoresque estate workers’ cottages, although four older houses remained, among them seemingly this dwelling. By around 1900, this building was the sole survivor. It remained largely in its original form until about 1985, when the current owner added a garage, raised the roof pitch, and constructed the large rear extension.
