Description
West Gate Lodge is an irregular single-storey neo-classical gate lodge built around 1900 to designs by architect William J. Fennell. It stands at the west entrance to Ballywalter Park, set on the east side of Greyabbey Road approximately one mile south-west of Ballywalter in County Down.
The lodge is constructed in sandstone and stucco and follows an L-shaped plan with each arm gabled and finished with a mutule pediment containing the Mulholland coat-of-arms and their motto "SEMPER PRAECINCTUS". An acroterion moulding crowns each gable apex. On the west (road) elevation a canted bay window with architraved openings and a parapet balustrade projects to survey the gates. The south (avenue) elevation features a semicircular-headed window framed with pilasters and a keystoned archivolt. Within the internal angle of the L-plan sits a porch with a bowed entablature supported by a pair of Tuscan columns and responds rising from a base that runs around the entire lodge as a stringcourse, aligning with the window cills. Rusticated quoins emphasise the building's corners, and a small chimney stack projects above the roofline.
A high enclosure wall with a timber-sheeted door on its east side adjoins the lodge at its north-east corner, enclosing a small yard. A small modern steel window has been inserted on the right side of the north gable, detracting from the original design.
The gate screen to the west of the lodge incorporates similar elements to those at the east entrance: heavily rusticated sandstone pillars with plain frieze and moulded caps, decorative spear-head cast iron carriage gates and railings, and a pedestrian gate on the north side.
The lodge was built following the acquisition of lands in Ballyatwood and the relocation of the western entrance from its original position further to the north-east. The original western gate lodge was subsequently demolished as the estate enlarged, though its gates were dismantled and reconstructed at the new entrance.
