Bridge on estate track, Ballywalter Park, Springvale, Ballywalter, Newtownards, Co. Down, BT22 2PP

A picturesque sandstone bridge, likely dating to around 1850, stands on an estate track near Ballywalter Park in Springvale, Newtownards, County Down. Designed by Charles Lanyon, the bridge spans a stream approximately 340 metres west of the main mansion. It is currently overgrown.

The bridge features a segmental arch approximately 1.5 metres wide, built with vermiculated voussoirs (overlapping stones) and projecting, plain keystones. Sturdy panelled end piers support a cornice that runs over the arch’s crown. A balustrade serves as the parapet, with decorative balusters between the end piers and a central pier. The inner and outer faces of the central piers are ornamented with shell motifs, and the end piers have blocking stones above the cornice.

The bridge was probably constructed around 1850, coinciding with Lanyon’s work extending and remodelling the main house for Andrew Mulholland. In 1971, brickwork repairs on the east side of the bridge were noted, though these are no longer visible due to overgrowth. The bridge possesses architectural interest due to its style, proportions, ornamentation, plan form, structural system, setting, and group value, as well as historical interest relating to its authorship and local significance.
