Culvert face and bridge, Ballywalter Park, Springvale, Ballywalter, Newtownards, Co. Down, BT22 2PP

This is a rubble-built culvert face with a roughly 1-meter wide arch, partially blocked and built into an embankment approximately a short distance west of the stables at Ballywalter Park. The arch features a vermiculated keystone, and three rusted iron bars project from the face; these may have once supported a grill covering the arch. A roughly 1.5-meter wide bridge has been built immediately to the west of the culvert face, featuring a screen of rough, dry-jointed rubble over a small arch. The bridge track is now grass-covered.

The culvert face exhibits some formal design elements and may have been constructed around the same time as the laying out of the gardens at Ballywalter Park, between approximately 1846 and 1852. The bridge, however, is much more rudimentary in its construction and is likely to be of a later date.

The structure, located approximately half a mile south of Ballywalter in the townland of Springvale, demonstrates local interest and contributes to the group value of the surrounding area. It was originally used as a bridge, and remains in that use today. The date of construction is estimated to be between 1840 and 1859. The listing covers both the bridge and the culvert face.
