Bridge on garden path, Ballywalter Park, Springvale, Ballywalter, Newtownards, Co. Down, BT22 2PP

This is a small, picturesque sandstone bridge, likely dating to around 1850, designed by Charles Lanyon. It spans a stream within the Ballywalter Park estate, approximately 100 metres west of Ballywalter Park House, which is less than a mile south of Ballywalter village. The bridge is partially covered in ivy.

The bridge features a segmental arch approximately 1.5 metres wide, constructed with vermiculated voussoirs and eroded keystones that may originally have been in the form of lionheads. Vermiculated quoins are present at the bases of the end piers, though now partly obscured by greenery. A cornice runs from the piers over the crown of the arch. A balustrade forms the parapet, with a decorative pierced design between robust panelled end piers and a smaller central pier. The inner face of the central pier features a shell motif, and piers have blocking stones above the cornice.

The bridge was probably constructed around 1850, coinciding with Charles Lanyon's extension and remodelling of Ballywalter Park House for Andrew Mulholland. Historical records, including Ordnance Survey maps and valuation records from 1834 to 1929, document the bridge’s existence and the wider estate’s development. The bridge is valued for its style, proportion, ornamentation, plan form, structural system, setting, and group value, and also for its association with Charles Lanyon and its local historical interest.
