Description
This is a small, picturesque estate worker's or gamekeeper's lodge, likely dating to around 1870-80, possessing both architectural and historical significance. It is situated in a woodland clearing near the northern boundary of Seaforde Demesne, approximately 400 metres west of the Newcastle Road and 1.5 miles north of Seaforde.
The front, or southern, façade is symmetrical, dominated by a gabled porch resembling a sentry box, with a panelled door. Mullioned and transomed four-pane windows flank the porch on either side. The upper portion of the porch is timber-framed and sits on a rendered masonry base. The roof is covered in natural slate, featuring two decorative bands created with lighter-coloured bevelled slate. Matching sash windows (2/2 panes) are positioned to the left and right of the porch. The east gable features two symmetrically placed sash windows at ground floor level, and a semicircular headed sash window (also 2/2 panes) centrally positioned on the first floor. A modern timber window is incorporated into a lean-to extension on the right side of this gable. The west gable mirrors the east gable's design. A lean-to return on the left side includes a modern door and high-level window, and abuts a gabled outbuilding at its far left. The north rear elevation has a lean-to return on the left side, and is otherwise blank. The roof has a coxcomb ridge tile with finial.
The lodge replaced an earlier dwelling, previously functioning as a gate lodge as noted on an Ordnance Survey map from 1858. It appears to have later served as a gamekeeper's lodge, likely associated with nearby kennels. Records from the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) and Ordnance Survey maps from around 1858 and 1901 provide further historical context. While one source suggests a construction date around 1850, map evidence and the building’s overall appearance indicate a later date of around 1870-80. The lodge exhibits architectural merit through its style, proportions, ornamentation, and plan form. It is of good quality and retains its original features, set within a distinctive woodland setting, and contributes to the group value of Seaforde Demesne.
