Description

This is a wide, low gate screen, likely dating to the 1830s or later, situated at the ‘Ballynahinch’ entrance to Seaforde Demesne, on the south side of Tannaghmore Road, approximately 1.5 miles north of Seaforde and 5 miles southwest of Ballynahinch. The screen fronts the demesne drive and is composed of a wide, straight central section flanked by short, curving end walls to the east and west.

The central gateway features two square stone gate pillars with panelled shafts, moulded courses above and below, a panelled frieze above the upper course, a cornice course and pyramidal caps. Decorative iron railings are positioned behind these pillars. The curving end walls each have two smaller, similarly styled stone pillars. The walls themselves appear to be rendered and have stone coping. Significant portions of the eastern side of the screen are currently obscured by foliage.

The screen is considered to have group value with the adjacent gate lodge and other buildings within the Seaforde estate. It is believed the screen likely dates to around 1830, corresponding with the depiction of both the gate lodge and screen on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map. While the stone pillars exhibit a classical style typical of the 1830s, the iron gates and railings appear to be of a later, late Victorian style, and may represent a replacement of an earlier screen. The design incorporates a deliberate sense of style, proportion, and ornamentation, and is appreciated for its setting. The design is attributed to John Lynn. The listing includes the gates, pillars, railings, and walling.
