Description

This is a simple, single-storey Presbyterian church built around 1830. It is located on the north side of Demesne Road in Seaforde Demesne, near Downpatrick. The church is of limited architectural interest.

The main front gable faces west and features a relatively small, pointed-arch doorway with panelled double doors and a fanlight containing a stained-glass emblem of a burning bush. The south facade has four large, pointed-arch windows fitted with modern PVC frames. The rear gable is blank, while the north facade incorporates a flat-roofed extension to the left, featuring large windows with metal frames. To the right of this extension on the main facade is a timber-sheeted door. The north facade is finished in rough cast rendering, while the remainder of the building is treated with dry dash rendering, smooth cement base, wall edges, and surrounds to most of the openings. The gabled roof is covered in natural slate and has narrow rendered parapets. A gravel car park surrounds the building, and a low, rendered wall with simple iron railings runs along the south side.

The church first appeared on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map as a ‘Seceder’s Meeting House’. Valuation records from around 1836 indicated that the building was unfinished at that time, with an estimated cost of £20 required for lathing and plastering. The Ordnance Survey memoirs of December 1836 described it as being built by subscription and having a capacity for a congregation of approximately 250 people. An extension was added to the north side by 1858. Historical records, including those from the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI), document the church’s construction and subsequent valuations.
