Description
Edengrove Presbyterian Church
A simple rubble-built Presbyterian church of vernacular classical style, constructed in 1841 and located on the north side of Dromore Road, west of Ballynahinch town centre in County Down.
The building is single storey with a symmetrical south-facing gabled front elevation dominated by a large central gabled porch. At the centre of the porch is a tall semicircular headed recess containing a panelled timber double door topped with a large rose window-like fanlight, which originally featured Georgian style glazing. Above the recess is a granite string course following the curve of the arch and linked to a cement verge course, forming a tympanum. Within the tympanum, just above string course level, is a diamond shaped slate panel inscribed "Second Presbyterian Church, Built A.D. 1841". The exposed portions of the main gable behind the porch are blank, with a similar tympanum to that of the porch.
The east and west facades are identical, each featuring five tall semicircular headed windows. These were originally timber framed sash windows with Georgian panes, one of which opens in tilt and turn fashion. The panes are now filled with coloured dimpled glass. The main building is constructed in largely squared dark fieldstone with regular coursing.
A small single storey gabled extension was added to the rear, appearing to date from the early twentieth century (circa 1920), built in rubble with blue engineering brick used for quoins and dressings. The extension has timber sheeted doors on its east and west faces, and a single flat arch window with modern frame on the north gabled face. The roof of the whole building is slated, with a rendered parapet to the extension and PVC rainwater goods.
The church was extensively renovated in 1970-71, when the original window frames were replaced with modern versions and the present pews installed.
The immediate setting to the west and south is covered in tarmac. The area to the east and north comprises a graveyard. Decorative iron railings and cast iron gate piers bound the site to the south, with railings linking to a rubble wall and vehicle gateway to the west. Railings originally continued northward demarcating the western boundary of the church grounds but have since been removed.
