Description
Methodist Church, Lisburn Street, Ballynahinch
This two-storey gabled Methodist church was originally built in 1856 as a relatively simple gabled structure. It was greatly extended and altered in 1982, and now presents a completely modern appearance. The original church cell has been converted to serve as a hall, with the church itself relocated to a new extension on the western side of the building.
The building sits on the south-west side of Lisburn Street to the west of Ballynahinch town centre. The east gabled front, at its centre, features three semicircular-headed windows with leaded panes, the central one being the tallest. To the left is a semicircular arch-headed opening with a modern glazed door leading into a small porch. To the right side, the gable merges with a screen wall that creates the illusion of a symmetrical façade, although the façade is in fact slightly asymmetrical, with the right side being slightly shorter and its corner therefore slightly higher. A matching semicircular arch-headed opening corresponds to the door on the left. At the apex of the gable is a small stone finial. Directly below this is a small panel inscribed "Wesleyan Chapel 1856".
The ground to the north side of Lisburn Street drops sharply, resulting in the north elevation being fully two-storied. To the left is the end of the screen wall. To the right are three semicircular-headed windows, with the fall to ground level following the line of an outside stair. To the right of the stair is a small semicircular-headed window. Further right is a two-storey projecting bay. To the left of the bay's ground floor is a recessed porch, open on the north and east sides. To the right are four small semicircular-headed windows. On the first floor is a small gable feature with a large cross and the words "Methodist Church" directly below it. To either side is a semicircular arch-headed window.
The west elevation comprises a series of vertical structural fins. Between the fins are tall windows, while at ground floor level the wall is recessed behind the fins to create a wide covered porch effect. The south façade is largely obscured by adjoining buildings but appears to have three small windows at first-floor level.
The building is rendered and painted, with the gabled roof appearing to be covered in artificial slate.
