Description
Rockmore is a compact, one and a half storey house constructed between 1880 and 1899 in a late Victorian free classical style. It is situated on a slight rise on the west side of Main Street, north of Ballynahinch town centre.
The front façade is symmetrical and features gabled bays. A panelled front door is flanked by Doric ¾ columns which support a lintel and small cornice. Above the door is a plain fanlight, all set within an elliptical headed arch with mouldings. To either side of the centre entrance are chamfered three-sided bays, each with a 1/1 sash window with a segmental head. Above each bay is a broad moulded string course, above which sits the faceted hip roof. The corners have in/out moulded quoins. A decorative dentil course supports an ogee cast iron gutter. The south facade includes a small upper floor gable centrally, with a semicircular headed window beneath. A segmental arch headed window is to the left of the ground floor, and a modern French door with a moulded surround is to the left of that. The north façade mirrors this arrangement, with the French door replaced by a blind window opening. Two plainly detailed single-storey hipped roof returns extend to the rear, now partially enclosed by a PVC conservatory. The front roof is hipped and slated, with decorative red fireclay ridge tiles. The walls rest on a slightly splayed plinth.
The property is believed to have been built in 1892 for a local doctor, and was acquired by the present owner’s family in 1965.
