Ballynahinch Bridge, Dromore Street, Ballynahinch, Co Down

The Ballynahinch Bridge carries the Dromore Road over the Ballynahinch river and appears to have been constructed in the mid to later 19th century. It is a single-span road bridge built of rubble stone with granite voussoirs, rough granite coping, and a segmental arch. To the north side, a metal pipe is positioned close to the bridge's face and supported by a steel beam. The northern parapet abuts a single-story, rendered store-like building to the east, while to the south it merges with a low, curving rubble wall.

A bridge existed on this site as early as 1777, as shown on Taylor and Skinner’s map of the roads of Ireland. However, historical maps from 1834 and 1858 indicate the Dromore Road was narrower and had a more pronounced bend at the river crossing, suggesting a previous bridge existed at that time. The 1834 Ordnance Survey Memoirs describe this earlier bridge as an old, plain structure with a single arch on the south side and two small arches on the north. By 1900, the road had been straightened, likely requiring the rebuilding of the bridge, although the northern face retained its original orientation. An illustration from 1860 suggests the bridge's reconstruction occurred between 1858 and 1860. The bridge is of industrial archaeological interest.
