Ballynahinch Technical College, Church Road, Ballynahinch, Co Down, BT24 8LP

The building is a single-storey, sprawling technical college complex, largely dating from 1949-50, with subsequent additions. It is situated in a hollow to the west side of Church Road, on the south side of Ballynahinch. The complex consists of four main sections linked by corridors. The front block, exhibiting a mild Art Deco influence, is ‘U’ shaped, with the legs of the ‘U’ forming a small entrance court. The central section features smooth rendered brickwork, a flat roof, and symmetry, incorporating a tall two-storey tower. The wings contain classrooms with pitched roofs and attached corridors having flat roofs, constructed using the pre-fabricated aluminium Bristol System. A block to the south is a classroom also constructed in the Bristol system. To the far south is a gymnasium constructed in brick with smooth render, distinguished by a corbelled eaves course and a natural slate roof, with several flat-roofed pavilions attached. A western block is similarly constructed in brick with smooth render and a natural slate roof, and lacks an eaves course. Several ‘Portacabin’ classrooms are located on the south side of the complex. The original sections of the building employed the Bristol system of pre-fabricated aluminium sections, reportedly the first use of the system in Northern Ireland following manufacturing commencement at Short Brothers & Harland's Newtownards plant.
