Description

This single-storey butcher’s shop, built in 1914, stands on Dromore Street, Ballynahinch, at the junction with High Street. Designed by Hobart & Heron, it displays an ornate free Baroque façade featuring ceramic tiling, including detailed animal head motifs. The building is tightly integrated within the surrounding terrace.

The front façade, facing roughly south, has two large semicircular openings, each containing a modern window frame and glazed door. Dark green ceramic tiles cover the panelled stall risers, continuing upwards to the springing of the arches. The original terracotta colour of the tiling above this level was painted white sometime in the 1970s. The arches themselves feature a moulded egg and dart course and keystones. Decorative three-dimensional ox's head and bas-relief ram's heads are positioned within the spandrels above the arches. A frieze with a dentilled cornice runs above the arch level, supporting a signboard with the owner’s names rendered in raised plastic lettering, reflecting a 1970s typeface. A parapet tops the façade, featuring short panelled end piers and a central, curving Baroque gable with moulding, scrolls, and a kidney-shaped decorative cartouche. Behind the parapet is a slated gabled roof.

The building was originally constructed for a Mr. Coulter. The ceramic tiles were manufactured by Middleton Fireclay Works of Leeds. The shop subsequently passed to the Carlisle family before being sold to the current owners. A small rear elevation exists, largely obscured by a narrow outbuilding extension linking to a larger building to the north; there is no access to the rear of the property.
